The Carling Knockout Round of 16 has produced a draw packed with heavyweight names, compelling match-ups and opportunities for the tournament’s smaller clubs to upset the established order. Orlando Pirates begin their title defence against Milford FC, while Kaizer Chiefs face TS Galaxy in one of the most appealing fixtures on the card.
The competition starts on 24 October, with the Premier Soccer League set to confirm the individual fixture dates in due course. The seeded draw has paired last season’s top eight Betway Premiership finishers with clubs from the lower half of the standings, creating a route into the quarter-finals that rewards league performance without removing the possibility of a cup upset.
For supporters, the appeal lies in the variety of the ties. Established contenders face different tactical problems, while clubs outside the traditional group of trophy favourites have an opportunity to make their mark in a knockout competition where one result can transform an entire campaign.
Sundowns, Pirates and Chiefs headline the Carling Knockout Round
Mamelodi Sundowns meet Marumo Gallants in a fixture that places the league’s technically accomplished side against opponents who have already experienced a domestic cup final. Gallants lost 2-0 to Pirates in last season’s Carling Knockout final, so their return to the competition offers another opportunity to make a deep run.
Sundowns will expect their possession-based football to give them control of the tie, but cup matches often reward efficiency as much as territorial dominance. Gallants will need to make their moments count if they are to keep the contest within reach.
Pirates have Milford FC as their first opponents in a defence of the trophy they won last season. The Buccaneers beat Gallants in the final as part of a domestic treble, and their pedigree makes them one of the sides to watch. Milford, however, have a valuable opportunity to measure themselves against one of the country’s leading teams.
Chiefs versus TS Galaxy could prove just as compelling. Galaxy have established themselves as a side capable of disrupting opponents, while Chiefs will know that their performance across the 90 minutes must justify their status as one of South African football’s biggest clubs. The tie offers a meeting of two teams with different profiles and plenty to play for.
Stellenbosch FC, the 2023 champions, face Durban City. Stellenbosch made history with their first major trophy in that inaugural edition under Carling Black Label, and their cup experience gives this fixture added interest. Durban City will have the chance to make their own mark against a club that knows how to navigate this competition.
The remaining ties are Kruger United against AmaZulu FC, Golden Arrows against Chippa United, Polokwane City against Siwelele FC and Sekhukhune United against Richards Bay FC. Each offers a route to the last eight, and the draw leaves room for an underdog to upset the apple cart.
A Cup competition built around its supporters
The Carling Knockout returns for its fourth edition since Carling Black Label revived the former Telkom Knockout in 2023. Magesi FC’s triumph in 2024 demonstrated how quickly a cup run can elevate a club, while Pirates’ latest success reinforced the competition’s appeal among South Africa’s leading sides.
The tournament also offers a reward beyond the trophy. The winners earn a place in the Carling Black Label Cup, where they meet a PSL All-Star XI selected by fans through voting. The squad features players from both the Betway Premiership and the DStv Diski Challenge.
For 2026, Carling Black Label has introduced its Champion Coach Experience, which invites supporters to predict the starting line-ups for both teams in each fixture. Fans can use unique codes from promotional packs to enter their predictions, earn points on a leaderboard and compete for prizes, including the chance to experience the final as a Champion Coach.
Supporters can also vote for the Carling Knockout Cup Champion of the Match during each game. One fan who correctly predicts the Man of the Match stands a chance to win R10,000.
The brand’s wider campaign includes its #NoExcuse platform, which has addressed gender-based violence and harmful ideas about masculinity since 2017. Its Real Injury Time initiative challenges damaging behaviours, while Champions for Change encourages men to take positive action. The Carling Knockout Round now gives clubs a direct route towards silverware and supporters a more active role in the action. With eight ties on the schedule, the competition offers plenty for fans to follow once the fixtures get under way.
