The dawn of a new era at Naturena has sparked a renewed sense of optimism among the Amakhosi faithful. Following a flawless start to the campaign, Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has expressed immense satisfaction with his squad’s rapid adaptation to his footballing philosophy. However, the pragmatic tactician is quick to temper expectations, sternly reminding supporters and pundits alike that the Glamour Boys are still a work in progress.

The Soweto giants have officially kicked off their season with consecutive victories, painting a promising picture for a club desperate to end a lengthy drought and reclaim its former glory. The positive momentum began with a morale-boosting triumph in the Toyota Cup, where Chiefs confidently dispatched Zimbabwean outfit Scottland FC. This early taste of silverware, celebrated passionately in Rustenburg, set the perfect stage for their Betway Premiership opener against top-flight newcomers, Kruger United.

Travelling to the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, Chiefs delivered a commanding 3-1 victory that showcased both their attacking flair and tactical resilience. The match served as a tantalising preview of Da Cruz’s tactical blueprint. Amakhosi appeared notably more aggressive in possession and showcased a lightning-fast transition game—a stark contrast to the lethargic performances that plagued much of their previous league campaign.

The fixture, however, was not without its hurdles. After Flavio Da Silva handed the visitors a well-deserved early lead, Chiefs suffered a setback when Kruger United snatched a late equaliser just before the halftime whistle. Furthermore, the goalscorer was forced off the pitch due to an unfortunate injury. Yet, it was the emphatic response from the technical bench that most encouraged the travelling supporters.

Enter Wandile Duba. Replacing the injured Da Silva at the interval, the dynamic forward took the game by the scruff of the neck, netting a brilliant second-half brace to ensure maximum points returned to Johannesburg. This instant impact highlighted the emerging squad depth and a collective fighting spirit that has been meticulously fostered since the club’s intensive pre-season camp in Spain.

Speaking after the comprehensive win over Kruger United, Da Cruz was full of praise for his players’ commitment, whilst maintaining a grounded outlook regarding the title race. “I think it’s the game model; the players like this game model and they like working hard for us, so I hope it continues,” the Frenchman noted, acknowledging the squad’s positive reception of his rigorous methods.

Despite the tangible improvements, the head coach understands the perilous nature of early-season hype and the immense pressure of managing South Africa’s most supported club. “I understand that it’s only two games and the season will be very long, so we have a lot of work to do,” Da Cruz cautioned.

These opening fixtures have undoubtedly laid a solid foundation for Da Cruz’s ambitious project at Naturena. A clear playing identity is taking shape, the squad is responding positively to instructions, and crucial points are already on the board. While the long road ahead in the Betway Premiership promises far sterner tests for the Glamour Boys, the current trajectory suggests that Kaizer Chiefs are finally heading in the right direction. For now, the Amakhosi faithful can dare to dream, even as their manager insists the very best is yet to come.
