As the clock ticks towards the final month of the summer window, the 2026 Premier League transfer market has already reshaped the landscape of English football. Opening on June 15 and set to close on September 1 at 11pm UK time, clubs across the top flight have engaged in unprecedented spending to reinforce their ranks following the 2026 World Cup.
The headlining narrative of the window revolves around three astronomical nine-figure transfers. Chelsea made the boldest splash by acquiring Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers for a staggering £117 million. Not to be outdone, Manchester City secured Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson in a deal worth £116 million. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur sent shockwaves through the league by poaching Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for £100 million, signalling massive intent under their renewed leadership.
Tottenham have easily been one of the busiest teams in the market. Beyond the Tonali deal, Spurs splashed £85 million on West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and £52 million on Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke. They also added experienced firepower on free transfers, snapping up former Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson and Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi. Chelsea matched that ambition by adding Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix for £51 million and Sporting prodigy Geovany Quenda for £43.5 million, whilst balancing the books by selling Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for £51.8 million and Andrey Santos to Manchester United for £50 million.
African talent has remained central to the window’s biggest storylines. Newcastle United reinvested their Tonali windfall heavily into African prospects, signing Ivorian winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim for £42 million and French-Ivorian midfielder Aladji Bamba from Monaco for £35.5 million. Brentford also bolstered their central midfield by landing Malian star Mamadou Sangare from Lens in a £39 million deal.
On the exit front, the summer marked the end of an extraordinary era at Anfield, with Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah officially departing Liverpool upon the expiration of his contract. Elsewhere, several legendary veterans stepped away or moved abroad: James Milner announced his retirement from football, whilst John Stones, Bernardo Silva, and Casemiro secured free transfers away from the Premier League.
With weeks left before the September 1 deadline, managers are scrambling to finalise their squads before the window slams shut.
