Rulani Mokwena’s record deserves more than praise for a perfect start. The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach has won 11 consecutive competitive matches at Pyramids FC, surpassing the best starts recorded by two previous managers.

His latest victory, a 4-1 result away to Tala’ea El Gaish on 20 October, extended that sequence and kept Pyramids top of the Egyptian Premier League with 21 points from seven matches. Al Ahly and Zamalek had 16 points apiece at the time, although Al Ahly had played one game fewer.

For Mokwena, the achievement carries a tactical dimension. Winning consistently across domestic and continental fixtures demands more than a strong starting eleven. Coaches must manage different opponents, maintain standards across the squad and find solutions when matches become uncomfortable. Pyramids have won all 11 competitive fixtures under the South African, with their latest league result offering another example of their ability to recover control after conceding.

Rulani Mokwena Surpasses Previous Pyramids Benchmarks

The historical comparison strengthens his case. Hossam Hassan went unbeaten across his first 11 matches during the 2018-19 season, with six victories and five draws. Argentine coach Ramón Díaz also reached 11 games without defeat in 2019, recording seven wins and four draws. Mokwena has gone one better by winning every match in his sequence.

The numbers also place his early league performance in context. Seven wins from seven have given Pyramids the maximum 21 points available. Such consistency puts pressure on Egypt’s established powers, while giving Mokwena an opportunity to build a side capable of sustaining its level against stronger opposition.

His team’s 4-1 win against Tala’ea El Gaish demonstrated its attacking range. Mohanad Lasheen scored in the sixth minute, Mostafa Ziko added a second in the 15th, and Mahmoud Saber and Mahmoud Zalaka struck late after Ahmed Tarek had reduced the deficit. Pyramids did not allow that setback to derail their afternoon.

Mokwena’s next examination comes in the CAF Champions League, where Pyramids face El Merriekh in the second leg of their preliminary-round tie. The Egyptian side won the first leg 1-0 away from home. Progress into the competition proper would give Mokwena another chance to test his team’s credentials against continental opposition.

The early record has put Mokwena firmly on the map in Egyptian football. The harder task is to keep his players producing the same standards once opponents have enough footage to prepare specifically for his side. His first 11 matches have established a formidable benchmark; the response to that growing scrutiny will determine how far this Pyramids team can go.
