The Patrick Maswanganyi transfer has brought an unexpected end to one of Orlando Pirates‘ most productive attacking partnerships of the past three seasons, with the midfielder joining Bahrain Premier League side Alkhaldiya Sports Club.
The move was confirmed by Pirates on Monday, 24 August, after Maswanganyi was left out of the squad for the MTN8 semi-final first leg against Sekhukhune United two days earlier. His absence had raised questions, particularly after head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou offered little clarity on the situation. The club’s announcement has now provided the answer.
What makes the departure notable is that Pirates did not present Maswanganyi as a player who had fallen out of favour. Quite the opposite. The club stated that the 28-year-old remained part of the technical team’s plans for the season but that he had expressed a strong desire to pursue an opportunity abroad. Pirates subsequently agreed to facilitate the transfer.
A significant loss for Orlando Pirates
Maswanganyi’s value to Pirates went beyond his numbers. He brought a left-footed option between the lines, could operate from the flank or centrally, and was particularly effective when given freedom to drift into dangerous areas.
His first season at the club established that reputation quickly. After joining from SuperSport United in 2023, he collected three major individual awards at the 2023-24 PSL Awards, including Players’ Player of the Season.
His overall contribution was substantial. Pirates’ own player profile records 119 appearances, 28 goals and 18 assists for the club, although the final appearance figure may differ slightly depending on the competition data cut-off.
He also leaves as a Betway Premiership champion, having been part of a Pirates side that eventually claimed the league title in the 2025-26 season.
The timing therefore makes the transfer particularly significant. Pirates are already navigating a demanding campaign involving domestic competition and continental football, and losing an established attacking midfielder midway through the early stages of the season removes an option that had already demonstrated his ability to influence matches.
Pirates have respected the player’s decision
The club’s handling of the transfer is perhaps the clearest indication of how Maswanganyi was viewed internally.
Pirates said they had no intention of standing in his way after discussions with the player and his representatives. That suggests the decision was driven primarily by Maswanganyi’s desire for a new opportunity rather than a breakdown between player and club.
