The 2026/27 Betway Premiership season is officially under way, and defending champions Orlando Pirates have immediately laid down a marker. In front of a raucous, sold-out crowd at the majestic Orlando Amstel Arena this past Saturday, the Buccaneers secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over top-flight debutants Milford. It was the perfect start for the Soweto giants, who netted on either side of the half-time whistle to claim maximum points and temporarily summit the league table on Match Day One. The anticipation surrounding the return of competitive domestic football was palpable, and the hosts ensured their passionate supporters went home completely satisfied.

Right from the referee’s first whistle, Pirates exhibited their intent. They dominated possession, pinning the newly promoted Stallions deep inside their own half. However, despite their territorial supremacy and intricate passing strings, the Buccaneers initially struggled to fashion clear-cut opportunities in the final third. The debutants, clearly eager to prove they belong in the elite tier, stood resolute and even carved out early openings of their own. Milford asked genuine questions of Pirates’ shot-stopper, Sipho Chaine. The agile keeper was forced into a sharp low dive to deny an ambitious long-range strike, and he had to be fully alert again in the 20th minute to repel a stinging effort from Cebolenkosi Mthethwa.

Those fleeting moments of vulnerability seemed to awaken the champions. The early nerves were comprehensively shattered midway through the first stanza following a clumsy challenge on powerhouse striker Yanela Mbuthuma right on the edge of the penalty area. Dead-ball specialist Oswin Appollis stepped up to the plate. His resulting right-footed strike took a fortuitous deflection off the wall, completely wrong-footing the goalkeeper before nestling securely into the back of the net to make it 1-0. Milford attempted a swift response, enjoying a brief spell of possession, but they lacked the cutting edge to alter the scoreline. Before the break, Deon Hotto narrowly missed doubling the advantage with a fiercely struck set-piece that sailed just wide.

Following the interval, the match settled into a familiar rhythm. Pirates commanded the ball but found clear pathways to goal elusive as they seemingly shifted down a gear. Thalente Mbatha offered a rare glimpse of attacking penetration before the hour mark, but his deflected shot was comfortably gathered by Milford goalkeeper Siphamandla Hleza. As the clock ticked down, the Buccaneers ramped up the pressure. Hleza produced a fantastic save in the 79th minute to deny Tshepang Moremi, but the dynamic winger would not be kept off the scoresheet for long. With merely five minutes left in regulation time, a brilliant through-ball breached the Stallions’ high defensive line. Moremi latched onto the pass, beautifully rounded the onrushing Hleza, and slotted home the crucial second goal to effectively kill the tie.

The visitors desperately pushed forward in the dying moments, with substitute Sicelo Masilela firing a dangerous ball across the face of the Pirates goal following a rapid foray down the left flank. Down the opposite end, Boitumelo Radiopane chanced his arm from distance, dragging his effort wide of the target. Ultimately, with minimal stoppages occurring throughout the 90 minutes, the referee quickly brought proceedings to a close. It was a thoroughly professional 2-0 triumph for the defending champions, securing a pristine start to their new campaign.
