The late Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams was remembered on one of football’s biggest stages after being included in a special tribute at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on Monday night.

Adams, who died in July at the age of 25, featured in the ceremony’s In Memoriam segment alongside some of the game’s most celebrated figures, including former England international Kevin Keegan and legendary Italian defender Franco Baresi.

The tribute took place at the London Palladium, where football’s elite gathered for the 70th edition of the prestigious awards.

While Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane claimed the men’s Ballon d’Or, the tribute to Adams offered South African supporters an opportunity to remember a midfielder whose promising career ended far too soon.

Adams had represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup just weeks earlier, appearing against Mexico, the Czech Republic and South Korea.

His involvement in the tournament represented the culmination of years of progress through South African football, having established himself as one of the country’s most accomplished young midfielders.

His death on 11 July prompted tributes across the football community, with President Cyril Ramaphosa and Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie among those who publicly mourned his passing.

Jayden Adams’ Rise From Stellenbosch to Continental Success

Adams’ development was an outstanding example of the talent emerging through South Africa’s domestic football system.

He rose through Stellenbosch FC’s academy and became its first graduate to secure a professional contract in August 2020.

The midfielder subsequently made 139 appearances for the Cape Winelands outfit and helped the club win the 2023 Carling Knockout.

His performances eventually caught the eye of Mamelodi Sundowns, who secured his services in January 2025.

Adams had earned his reputation through intelligent positioning, technical ability and an understanding of midfield play that allowed him to operate effectively in possession-oriented teams.

At Sundowns, he entered an environment where competition for midfield positions was fierce, yet he established himself among players accustomed to competing for domestic and continental honours.

He went on to celebrate Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League success with the Brazilians.

His international career was equally rewarding.

After making his Bafana Bafana debut in 2022, Adams earned 13 international caps and scored twice. He was also part of the South African squad that secured bronze at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.

His selection for the 2026 World Cup demonstrated the faith national coach Hugo Broos had placed in his abilities.

Adams had worked his way up through domestic football to compete against international opposition at the highest level.

Although his career was cut short, his achievements established him among the country’s successful young footballers.

The Ballon d’Or tribute ensured his name would be remembered beyond South Africa’s borders, alongside players whose contributions earned them a permanent place in football history.
