Orlando Pirates have taken inspiration from the streets of Soweto for their latest Adidas collaboration, unveiling a limited-edition third jersey that celebrates the neighbourhood where one of South Africa’s most celebrated football institutions began.

The Orlando Pirates 2026/27 kit draws on the architecture of Orlando, where the Buccaneers were established in 1937. Rather than relying on the club’s familiar black-and-white identity, Adidas has introduced an unconventional colour palette and an intricate graphic inspired by Soweto’s residential rooftops.

For a club whose identity is inseparable from its supporters, the decision to incorporate the surrounding neighbourhood into the jersey is a fitting tribute to nearly nine decades of football heritage.

The design also acknowledges a fundamental part of Pirates’ history. Although the Buccaneers have developed a following across South Africa and beyond, Orlando remains central to their identity. Generations of supporters have grown up with the club as part of their family and community life.

The most distinctive feature of the jersey is its rooftop-inspired pattern. The overlapping architectural graphics reference the densely populated residential areas of Soweto, with maroon, purple, orange and red accents set against a dark background.

The result is a design that breaks the mould of conventional football shirts without abandoning Pirates’ heritage.

Adidas has retained its signature three stripes, while the Buccaneers’ skull-and-crossbones emblem occupies its familiar position. An EQT-inspired collar and customised detailing at the back of the neck complete the design.

Beyond its appearance, the jersey incorporates Adidas’ Climacool+ technology, which is designed to improve ventilation and moisture management during competitive matches. Lightweight fabric also supports movement and comfort, ensuring the shirt meets the demands of professional football.

The Orlando Pirates 2026/27 kit made its public debut at South Africa Fashion Week on 24 October, an appropriate setting for a jersey that crosses the boundary between football apparel and contemporary fashion.
