A cluster of football stars gathered around the imposing, grand white Corinthian columned entrance of The London Palladium last night. The opulent theatre hosted elite athletes and presenters arriving in sharp tailored formal suits and elegant dresses for the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony.
Hours before the event, football royalty and managers spoke to reporters and posed for pictures on the red carpet. All eyes were undoubtedly on Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal who were the frontrunners for the night’s biggest prize. However, it was Kane who claimed the top spot, becoming the first Englishman to win the award in 25 years.
Kane held back tears as he accepted the 2026 Men’s Ballon d’Or award – Here is the story of a boy deemed “not athletic enough” who rose to the pinnacle of global football.
At just eight years old, Harry Kane was released from Arsenal’s youth academy, famously being told he was “a bit chubby” and lacked pace. He faced further rejection during a trial at Watford before finally landing an opportunity at Tottenham Hotspur’s academy.
At White Hart Lane, Kane endured four gruelling lower-league loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City, and Leicester City, often left as a substitute. Triggered by a mix of intense sadness and anger – Kane used the embarrassment of warming benches as fuel for his breakthrough season in the 2014-2015 season where he scored 31 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions. He silenced his critics who labelled him a “one-season wonder” by winning back-to-back Premier League Golden Boots. He spent years at Spurs dealing with more criticism over a lack of silverware despite his world-class talent.
Moving to Bayern Munich completely transformed his career trajectory – taking him from an unrewarded individual talisman to a global icon who fired Bayern Munich to a domestic double.
The 8-year old boy that was labelled “too chubby” could never have imagined that he would one day score an astounding 73 goals in 65 matches for club and country and win a Ballon D’or:
