Bafana Bafana’s first match at the 2026 World Cup was more of an exhibition of red cards than goals.

Referee Wilton Sampaio from Teresina de Goiás, Brazil was certainly not shy to dish out the much dreaded card in the Iconic Estadio Azteca stadium.

Coach Hugo Broos abandoned his usual 4 – 3 – 3 formation for a highly defensive 3 – 5 – 2(back five). This tactical blunder left Bafana Bafana with no creative spark in midfield. An early defensive disaster by midfielder Sphephelo Sithole deemed dreams of a rainbow nation.

Did Hugo Broos forget to show this team the video of the ball that flew into the top corner on the first day of the 2010 world cup? Could the players not visualize South-African flags painted on the faces of their people who waited 16 years for this moment? And what was Oswin Appollis doing on the bench?

These must have been some of the questions running through the minds of most South-Africans.

The disciplinary meltdowns of Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane coupled with the fact that the team could only engineer one Mbokazi rocket in anger all evening made this a painful watch for a nation buzzing with optimism before the game.

The reality is that Bafana Bafana now face an uphill battle to qualify for the next round after that horror show.

Grammy Award winner, Tyler alongside Mzanzi Youth Choir at least gave South-Africans something to be proud of:

They gave the world goose bumps, Bafana Bafana didn’t.

The South-African Pathway to the Round of 32

However, it is not all doom and gloom for Hugo Broos – Bafana Bafana can still mathematically turn their World Cup campaign around – so get out your calculators!

To advance, Bafana Bafana must capitalize on their remaining fixtures. Winning both remaining games would almost certainly guarantee a top-two spot and automatic progression. Even a win and a draw in their final two games could be enough to see them finish as one of the best third-place teams.

Czech Republic and South-Korea are going to be difficult matches but not mission impossible.

Spain lost their opening match in 2010 and still went on to win the tournament.

Argentina suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia in 2022 and  still went on to be world champions.

South-Africa also started with a loss – Are you thinking what I am THINKING?
