Kaizer Chiefs playmaker Mduduzi Shabalala has finally broken his silence regarding the devastating injury that brought his 2025/26 campaign to an abrupt halt and shattered his dreams of participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 22-year-old midfielder saw his season end prematurely during a highly-charged Betway Premiership fixture against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on 6 May 2026.
The injury occurred late in the first half of the 1-1 draw, following a heavy challenge from Sundowns’ Jayden Adams. Shabalala was stretchered off the pitch and rushed to hospital, where medical scans confirmed a fracture to his right humerus, the bone situated between the shoulder and the elbow.
Speaking candidly about the traumatic event, Shabalala admitted that the memory remains incredibly painful. “For me, even now it’s difficult to talk about that,” he revealed. The young star explained that he had been fully immersed in the match and enjoying his football just moments before the incident. He recalled receiving a pass from teammate Pule Mmodi, opening his body to play the ball, and then feeling the impact on his right foot from Adams’ tackle.
The mechanics of his subsequent fall ultimately caused the severe arm injury. Shabalala explained that he actively tried to avoid landing flat on his shoulder, opting instead to try and fall on his back. However, because his arm was trailing behind him and he couldn’t rotate quickly enough, he sustained the fracture. “To me, it was to say, maybe it’s not my turn,” he reflected philosophically on the cruel timing of the setback.
Mduduzi Shabalala: The Injury and the Recovery
The timing was indeed a bitter pill to swallow for the rising star, as the injury occurred merely days before Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos was due to finalise his squad for the global showpiece. Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef expressed his profound frustration at the time, noting how hard Shabalala had fought to earn his place in the national team setup ahead of the World Cup.
Despite the immense disappointment of missing out on a career-defining tournament, Shabalala is maintaining a positive outlook regarding his rehabilitation. The midfielder remains defiant, declaring, “I believe my turn will come again; I will come back soon and I will come back strong”. As he undergoes his recovery period, Kaizer Chiefs fans will be eagerly anticipating the return of a player whose vision and link-up play were integral to the team’s attacking mechanics this season.
