The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League has a fascinating spread of captains, with the armband going to everyone from a 17-year-old defender to players who have spent more than a decade in Ghana’s top flight.
There is also a useful tactical pattern in the appointments. Defenders and goalkeepers dominate the list, which makes sense in a league where captains are often expected to organise from behind, manage difficult moments and communicate constantly with teammates. But there are also attacking players and midfielders in the group, giving the league a mixture of personalities and leadership styles.
The most striking case is Labaran Majeed Alidu at Vision FC. Born in February 2009, the defender is only 17 and has already been given responsibility in the senior game. Current player records confirm his age and position, while reports from the opening weeks of the season have identified him as the youngest captain in the competition.
At the other end of the age range is a group of established players who have accumulated years of top-flight experience. Benjamin Asare, Fatawu Mohammed and Augustine Okrah all bring extensive Ghanaian football experience to their respective sides, while Yussif Mubarik enters the campaign as captain of the reigning champions.

Benjamin Asare – Hearts of Oak
Asare is one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the league. Born in 1992, he has been Hearts of Oak’s first-choice goalkeeper when fit and retained the captaincy for the 2026/27 campaign. His standing grew further after representing Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He has also earned 14 senior international caps according to current player records.
For Hearts, his value goes beyond making saves. A goalkeeper who has played at international level is naturally positioned to organise the defence and communicate with players in front of him.
Gideon Anaba – Gold Stars
Anaba is one of the younger captains in the division. The centre-back was born in October 2004, making him 21 at the start of the 2026/27 campaign, and has been with Gold Stars since January 2024.
His position gives him a natural leadership role. From the centre of defence, Anaba can influence the team’s positioning, deal with opposition forwards and help organise the defensive line. Gold Stars’ own social media channels also identify him as captain during the opening round of the new season.
Lord Amoah – Asante Kotoko
Amoah has been handed the captaincy at one of Ghana’s biggest clubs after coach Eric Tinkler selected him to lead Asante Kotoko for 2026/27. Hamzata Musah has been named his deputy.
The former Berekum Chelsea player operates primarily as a right-back. That gives Kotoko a captain who spends much of his time in positions where defensive organisation, communication and decision-making are essential.
Yussif Mubarik – Medeama SC
Mubarik leads the champions into a season in which Medeama will also have continental duties. He captained the side through their 2025/26 title-winning campaign, including the decisive run-in that secured the club’s second league championship.
The defender therefore begins the new season with recent experience of leading a successful title challenge. Medeama’s domestic ambitions will now be matched by the demands of the CAF Champions League.
Kweku Asuandzie Baffoe – Swedru All Blacks
Baffoe is an attacking player rather than a conventional defensive captain. The 24-year-old featured 24 times in Swedru All Blacks’ 2025/26 league campaign, scoring twice as the club competed in its first top-flight season in 16 years.
His captaincy gives All Blacks a leader who can influence games from further forward. He also has recent experience of the pressures that came with the club’s return to the top division.
Prince Anane – Berekum Chelsea
Anane is a 22-year-old left-back who has established himself at Berekum Chelsea. He has remained with the club through several Premier League campaigns and made 29 league appearances in 2025/26.
At his age, the captaincy represents a sizeable leadership role, but his experience at senior level means he is not new to the demands of Ghana’s top flight.
Alex Boakye – Aduana FC
Boakye is a defender and has been part of Aduana’s leadership group for some time. Earlier squad records listed him as vice-captain, making his elevation to the main captaincy a natural progression within the club. Aduana’s current squad still lists him among its defenders.
Aduana are traditionally one of the more tactically disciplined teams in the division, so a centre-back leading the side fits the club’s footballing identity.
Moses Author – Basake Holy Stars
Author is another young defender taking on a senior leadership role. Born in July 2005, the centre-back was 20 at the beginning of 2026/27 and made 22 league appearances for Holy Stars during the previous campaign.
He also showed his influence during 2025/26 when he was named Man of the Match after Holy Stars drew 0-0 with Vision FC in March.
Hamza Zakari – Port City
Zakari is already attached to one of the defining moments in Port City’s first top-flight season. The captain scored the equaliser in the club’s 1-1 draw with FC AshantiGold on Matchday 1, heading home in the second half to earn Port City a point in their first Premier League fixture.
That gives the new captain an immediate connection with the club’s historic debut. Port City will be looking to him for leadership as they adjust to the demands of the division.
Emmanuel Adu Siaw – FC Samartex
Adu Siaw is one of the more experienced club captains in the competition. The 30-year-old defender joined Samartex in 2020/21 and has remained with the club through its rise to the top of Ghanaian football.
He was captain when Samartex won their first Ghana Premier League title, a remarkable achievement for a club that had only recently established itself in the top division. His long association with Samartex makes him one of the most familiar figures in the squad.
Fatawu Mohammed – Karela United
Mohammed brings years of top-flight experience and international pedigree to Karela. The 34-year-old right-back previously captained Hearts of Oak and has also represented Ghana at senior level.
His experience is useful for a Karela side that has had to fight hard for its Premier League status in recent seasons. Mohammed’s career has also included a long spell with Hearts, where he became one of the club’s recognised leaders.
Labaran Majeed Alidu – Vision FC
Alidu is the standout young captain of the 2026/27 season. Born on 24 February 2009, he is only 17 and plays as a defender for Vision FC. Current records list him as a regular member of the club’s senior squad.
Giving the armband to a teenager is an unusual decision in senior football, particularly for a player who is still at the beginning of his professional career. It also reflects the emphasis Vision have placed on young Ghanaian players.
Augustine Okrah – Bechem United
Okrah’s captaincy comes with a long history in Ghanaian football. He first made his name with Bechem United and won the 2013/14 top-scorer award after scoring 16 league goals. He was also named the Premier League’s best player for that season.
More than a decade later, he is back wearing the armband for the club where he first established himself. Bechem therefore have one of the league’s most experienced attacking leaders.
Ramzy Abubakar – Young Apostles
Abubakar is a 20-year-old defensive midfielder who has become captain of Young Apostles. He was part of the side’s 2025/26 squad and featured prominently in midfield.
His appointment is another example of a young player being entrusted with responsibility. Young Apostles survived their second Premier League season and have set their sights considerably higher this time, with Abubakar publicly targeting a top-four finish.
Bariu Sule – Debibi United
Sule is a 23-year-old defender who helped Debibi United earn promotion from the Access Bank Division One League. He made 19 league appearances during the 2025/26 campaign as Debibi put together a promotion-winning season.
For a club stepping into the top division, having a captain who has been through the promotion campaign with the squad gives the new Premier League side a familiar leader.
Justice Blay – FC AshantiGold
Blay brings considerable top-flight experience to newly promoted FC AshantiGold. The midfielder previously spent several seasons with Asante Kotoko, where he was part of the club’s leadership group before moving on.
His move gives AshantiGold a player who already understands the demands of Premier League football. The club brought him in alongside other experienced additions ahead of its first-ever Premier League campaign.
Ishmael Addo – Heart of Lions
Addo is an experienced midfielder who has been part of Heart of Lions’ senior squad for several seasons. He was also selected for Ghana’s U20 squad in the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations cycle.
He is not new to the club’s leadership group. During the previous campaign, Addo was one of Lions’ attacking outlets and scored in their 3-0 win over Samartex in May.
Gidios Aseako – Dreams FC
Aseako gives Dreams FC another young goalkeeper in a leadership role. Born in January 2005, he is 21 and has been with Dreams since 2024. He was also part of Ghana’s U20 setup and has represented the national side at that level.
His position means much of his influence will come from organising the defence and managing situations in front of goal. For a relatively young goalkeeper, the captaincy adds another layer to his development.
The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season features 18 clubs, with defending champions Medeama SC beginning their title defence and newcomers Debibi United, FC AshantiGold 04 and Port City FC entering the division for the first time. The campaign began over the weekend of 4–7 September 2026 and is scheduled to conclude between 28 and 31 May 2027. The league consists of 34 matchdays, with fixtures played predominantly at weekends.
