SuperSport African Player of the Month nominations recognise five African footballers after productive October spells in the Premier League. Who has the strongest claim?
Nicolas Jackson has the strongest goal return among October’s five SuperSport African Player of the Month nominees, but reducing this contest to goals alone would overlook some of the month’s most influential performances. The shortlist brings together five internationals from Senegal, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast, each with a different contribution to their Premier League side.
Jackson’s four goals in four appearances for Aston Villa give him an obvious statistical advantage. His brace against Manchester City carries added significance because both goals helped secure a major victory against one of English football’s strongest opponents. He also scored against Brentford and Fulham, giving him a goal in every appearance during the assessment period. Few nominees can match that level of attacking production over four matches.
The question for voters is whether individual output should outweigh the less obvious contributions made elsewhere on the pitch. The other candidates have compelling arguments, even without Jackson’s scoring figures.
Mbeumo, Iwobi, Kudus and Ouattara offer different cases
Bryan Mbeumo has a head start in terms of award recognition. The Cameroon international won the inaugural August prize and now has an opportunity to claim another after scoring against Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United in October. His two goals in four appearances do not match Jackson’s return, but his ability to deliver against established Premier League opposition strengthens his nomination. Back-to-back recognition would also underline his consistency across the opening months of the campaign.
Alex Iwobi’s nomination presents a different argument. The Fulham midfielder scored against Hull City and helped his side keep two clean sheets. His average match rating of 7.7 also places his contribution in perspective. Iwobi’s value comes from his work across midfield, where his passing, positional awareness and defensive involvement influence how Fulham compete. His nomination gives voters a reason to look past conventional attacking statistics.
Mohammed Kudus has made his case through chance creation. The Tottenham attacker registered assists against Coventry City and Crystal Palace, although he did not score during October. His ability to beat opponents in one-on-one situations and create opportunities for team-mates gives Spurs an attacking dimension that cannot be measured through goals alone. Jackson may lead the scoring charts, but Kudus offers a different kind of attacking threat.
Abdul Ouattara completes the shortlist after a productive month for Ipswich Town. The Ivory Coast international scored against Fulham and assisted goals against Manchester City and Hull City. His three goal contributions demonstrate his involvement in several attacking situations. Unlike a striker whose nomination rests largely on finishing, Ouattara has contributed through both scoring and chance creation.
The voting presents supporters with five distinct performances to assess. Jackson has put his best foot forward with four goals, while Mbeumo has the advantage of previous recognition. Iwobi, Kudus and Ouattara offer equally interesting cases through their contributions in other areas.
The October SuperSport African Player of the Month winner will be decided by supporters through the SuperSport Predictor platform. With Antoine Semenyo taking September’s award after Mbeumo’s August victory, the next winner will become the third recipient of the monthly honour.
Voting is now open at SuperSport Predictor, giving African football fans the opportunity to decide which nominee receives October’s recognition.
