Spain have stretched their lead at the summit of the FIFA Men’s World Ranking for October 2026, helped by a strong sequence of UEFA Nations League victories. FIFA’s formula pays more for competitive fixtures than for friendlies, so those wins have been worth collecting. Argentina remain second, France third and England fourth, which leaves the upper reaches of the table looking settled while the real movement sits a little lower.

Portugal are the only major side to improve inside the top ten, climbing to fifth after four consecutive wins. That is a tall order in a sport where squads meet for brief windows and seldom find a rhythm, so the rise reflects consistency rather than one lucky result. Brazil sit one place below them in sixth, followed by Morocco, Belgium, the Netherlands and Mexico, who complete the top ten.

Morocco’s seventh place, ahead of both Belgium and the Netherlands, keeps them the highest-ranked African nation by a wide margin. Senegal follow in 18th and Egypt in 25th, so the gap between the continent’s leader and its chasing pack remains wide.

Switzerland Overtake Germany While Africa Makes Gains

Switzerland’s move to 12th puts them above Germany in 13th and Croatia in 14th, two nations with far grander reputations. Ranking points pay no heed to reputation, and the Swiss have simply been gathering them more efficiently. Colombia in 11th sit directly above them, which leaves Switzerland within touching distance of the top ten. Italy in 15th, the USA in 16th and Japan in 17th follow in a tightly packed cluster, where a single strong result can reorder several places at once.

Further down, South Africa and Mali have each climbed six places. Mali now occupy 47th and Bafana Bafana 48th, so both sit inside the top 50, with Venezuela in 49th and Chile in 50th close behind. Points gaps in that range tend to be slim, meaning a couple of poor results can undo a gain as quickly as it was made. Cameroon in 42nd and DR Congo in 40th are the African sides still ahead of the pair, so both have realistic targets above them as well as pursuers below.

The movement of the Africans is also worth reading alongside the wider spread of the table. Ten African nations now appear in the top 50 (Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, DR Congo, Cameroon, Mali and South Africa), and five of them sit between 25th and 30th or just beyond. Depth of that kind is what supports strong seedings in future qualifying draws, which is where ranking position turns into a practical advantage.
