The 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase has taken shape after Thursday’s draw in Monaco, with 36 clubs now knowing the eight opponents standing between them and the knockout rounds.
The format remains the same as the previous two seasons. Every team plays eight different opponents, with four matches at home and four away. The league table then determines who progresses. The top eight go directly into the last 16, while teams placed ninth through 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs. Clubs finishing 25th or lower are eliminated from European competition.
What makes the draw particularly interesting is the way several of the strongest sides have been paired against each other. There are no traditional groups to hide behind now. Every result contributes to one table, meaning a difficult run of fixtures can have a direct effect on a club’s route through the competition.
Champions League Draw 2026/27 Reveals Eight-Test League Phase

The 2026/27 Champions League Draw has produced a league phase packed with heavyweight meetings, away assignments and several fixtures that could shape the final standings.
The draw was held in Monaco on Thursday 27 August, with all 36 clubs discovering their eight opponents. The league phase retains the format introduced in 2024/25, meaning every team plays eight different opponents, with four matches at home and four away.
The biggest clubs have little room for an uneven run. Eight teams qualify directly for the last 16, while those finishing ninth to 24th enter the two-legged knockout play-offs. The bottom eight are eliminated from the competition.
That structure makes the strength of each schedule particularly relevant. A club can draw several elite opponents and still progress if it collects enough points elsewhere, while a supposedly favourable fixture list can become problematic if results are dropped against teams around the same level.
Champions League Draw results for every team
Several of Europe’s biggest clubs have been handed demanding schedules.
Arsenal face Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund at home, while Bayern Munich and Napoli are among their away opponents. The London club therefore has four fixtures against established Champions League sides, alongside matches against Lille, Real Betis, Slavia Prague and Sabah.
Real Madrid will host Inter, PSV, RB Leipzig and LASK, but their away schedule includes Arsenal and Roma as well as Shakhtar Donetsk and AEK Athens. The trips to Arsenal and Roma provide two of the more difficult away assignments in the draw.
Barcelona have Manchester City and Aston Villa at home, followed by Feyenoord and Como. Their away fixtures include PSG, Sporting CP, Galatasaray and Sabah. The visits to Paris and Istanbul could prove particularly demanding.
Manchester City have PSG, Sporting CP, Napoli and AEK Athens at home. Their away matches take them to Barcelona, Porto, RB Leipzig and Lens, giving them two major European tests in Barcelona and Leipzig.
Liverpool will host Atletico Madrid, Porto, Villarreal and Lens. Their away schedule contains Inter, Club Brugge, Fenerbahçe and LASK. The trip to Inter immediately catches the eye, while the Istanbul visit to Fenerbahçe adds another difficult away environment.
Bayern Munich have Arsenal, Real Betis, Bodo/Glimt and Slavia Prague at home. Their away fixtures are Atletico Madrid, Manchester United, Lille and Viking, leaving them with demanding trips to Madrid and Manchester.
Paris Saint-Germain face Barcelona, Roma, Galatasaray and Slovan Bratislava at home. Their away opponents are Manchester City, Aston Villa, Villarreal and Como. The two meetings with Barcelona and City give PSG one of the most demanding schedules among the leading contenders.
Atletico Madrid host Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Fenerbahçe and Viking. Their away games are against Liverpool, PSV, Bodo/Glimt and Stuttgart, with Liverpool providing one of the toughest fixtures on paper.
Borussia Dortmund welcome Inter, Real Betis, Villarreal and AEK Athens, while their away games are against Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bodo/Glimt and Sabah. Arsenal and Aston Villa give Dortmund a particularly testing pair of English away fixtures.
Inter host Liverpool, Club Brugge, Shakhtar Donetsk and Stuttgart. Their away schedule includes Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Feyenoord and Slovan Bratislava, putting both Madrid and Dortmund on their road schedule.

The league table will make every result part of a bigger calculation
The key difference in this Champions League format is that clubs cannot simply assess their schedule through the old group-stage lens. Eight separate opponents contribute to one table, and the difference between a direct place in the last 16 and a play-off tie can come down to a small number of points.
Every club receives two opponents from each of the four seeding pots, with one home and one away fixture against teams from each pot. Clubs cannot face another side from their own association and can draw no more than two opponents from any other association.
The strongest clubs therefore have to manage a wider range of fixtures than in the old group system. A home win against a lower-ranked opponent can be just as valuable in the final table as an impressive result against one of Europe’s giants, particularly when the competition for the top eight places becomes tight.
The league phase begins in September and stretches into January, with the eight matchweeks spread across five months.
