South Africa’s aspirations at the FIFA World Cup 2026 remain alive following a captivating, high-intensity 1-1 draw against Czechia at the Atlanta Stadium. With both nations desperately searching for their first points in Group A, the fixture unfolded as a tactical game of chess that ultimately transformed into a frantic, end-to-end spectacle. While Hugo Broos’s squad showed incredible resilience to rescue a point, a late surge left many wondering if they missed a golden opportunity to take all three.
The match highlights began with absolute heartbreak for the South African backline, who were caught cold just six minutes into the encounter. A booming long throw-in from Vladimír Coufal unpicked the Bafana Bafana defence, allowing Alexandr Sojka to cushion a clever pass into the path of Michal Sadílek. The Czech midfielder made no mistake, curling a sweet first-time strike beyond the reach of a diving Ronwen Williams to hand the Europeans an instantaneous advantage. South Africa controlled the ball for the remainder of the first half but found it difficult to break down a robust Czech defensive block.
The complexion of the game shifted dramatically in the second half when Broos opted for a tactical shuffle, introducing the youthful energy of Relebohile Mofokeng to spark the midfield into life. The sustained pressure eventually forced a breakthrough in the 83rd minute. An unyielding run down the flank by Thapelo Maseko culminated in a dangerous cross that struck the outstretched arm of Czech substitute Pavel Šulc. Referee Tori Penso had an unobstructed view and immediately pointed to the penalty spot, dismissing the furious protests of the Czech defenders.
Stepping into the spotlight with immense pressure resting on his shoulders, midfielder Teboho Mokoena epitomised calm. The Mamelodi Sundowns star coolly sent Czech goalkeeper Matěj Kovář the wrong way, slotting his spot-kick firmly into the bottom corner to send the traveling South African supporters into raptures. The ecstasy was somewhat tempered, however, as Mokoena’s earlier yellow card ruled him out of the high-stakes final group match against South Korea.
With the wind in their sails during seven frantic minutes of stoppage time, South Africa created a superb opportunity to win the match instead of drawing. Physical forward Evidence Makgopa did brilliantly to shield a late delivery, spinning past his defender to launch a low drive that was ultimately snuffed out by Kovář. While Czechia remained dangerous on the break, Bafana Bafana’s late dominance proved they had the momentum to claim a full victory had they found their cutting edge earlier in the day.
